Karpaha Sands, Sri Lanka Review – A Hidden Luxury Beach Paradise

Nestled on the stunning Kalkudah Beach along Sri Lanka’s untouched east coast, Karpaha Sands offers an extraordinary luxury glamping experience that perfectly balances modern comfort with natural beauty. After our stay at this boutique beach resort, we can confidently say it’s one of the most unique and memorable accommodations we’ve experienced in Sri Lanka.

Hotel Location & Getting To Karpaha Sands

Karpaha Sands is strategically located away from Sri Lanka’s main tourist hotspots on the beautiful east coast. While this remote location means no trains service the area, the journey is part of the adventure. We drove ourselves in a tuk-tuk from tuktukrental.com (which we highly recommend as the best way to see Sri Lanka), but transfers can also be arranged. There are no trains here, unlike on much of Sri Lanka’s south western coast.

The hotel sits on a secluded stretch of Kalkudah Beach just north of the Sri Lankan city of Batticaloa – remarkably, it’s the only hotel on this expansive 15km bay of pristine white sand and swaying palm trees. While the beachfront isn’t technically private, we only occasionally spotted local fishermen, usually at either end of the hotel’s beach area.

It’s worth noting that there really isn’t much tourist infrastructure around the Karpaha Sands hotel. While there are some towns nearby and a few things that may be worth checking out, for the most part you’ll likely be staying at the resort during your visit. The hotel is specifically set up for relaxation and unwinding, so if this is your intention for your Sri Lankan getaway, then Karpaha Sands is absolutely perfect for you.

First Impressions & Check-In

Arriving at Karpaha Sands just after 6pm as darkness fell, we were greeted by the subtle mood lighting that guides you to the entrance. Four smiling staff members immediately assisted with our luggage – a warm welcome that set the tone for our stay.

The check-in process was refreshingly easy. Instead of sitting at reception, the manager walked us directly to our room along sandy paths past the main pool and restaurant area. With only 17 rooms at the property, this personalized approach felt natural and welcoming. We completed check-in right in our room – making everything smooth, easy, and impressive.

Accommodation: Luxury Glamping Redefined

Karpaha Sands features 17 luxury glamping tents across three categories: Palam Suites, Koyala Suites and Seed Suites.

Palam Suites

We stayed in a Palam Suite – the beachfront tents situated directly on the beach. These are perfect for couples, sleeping two with unobstructed palm tree and ocean views. We had absolutely no regrets choosing the beachfront location.

Our tent featured a king-size bed positioned to overlook the gorgeous beach view. While very comfortable, we felt the bed linens could be softer for a hotel of this caliber. The outdoor waterfall shower behind the bedroom was definitely a highlight – showering in nature while water cascades like a waterfall over you is a unique and amazing experience we absolutely loved.

Room Features & Amenities

• Large air conditioning unit plus ceiling fans (bedroom and patio)
• Comfortable lounge area and outdoor sitting space
• Freestanding tub overlooking the outdoor shower area
• Stocked mini-fridge (drinks available at reasonable prices – $4 USD for large beer)
• Hair dryer and reliable WiFi
• Android phone for hotel communication
• No television by design – to keep you connected with nature

The tents offer excellent privacy, with ample separation and private gardens at the rear. We only heard the soothing sounds of wind and waves.

Other Room Categories

Karpaha Sand’s other room categories are garden suites and in our opinion, not as good as the Palam Suites, as we prefer beachfront access.

• Koyala Suites: Garden-view tents surrounded by greenery (sleep 2). Koyala suites are similar to the Palam suites however they are set back from the beach and do not have immediate beach access or views. They are a little smaller than the Palam suites but offer a greater amount of privacy (90m² vs the 110m² of the Palam Suites).
• Seed Suites: Two-bedroom family tents with living room (sleep 4). Like the Koyala suites they are also suited in their own private gardens, set back from the beach. at 180m² they are double the size of the Koyala suites, with two bedrooms either side of the main living room area, plus two bathrooms.

The Beach & Amenities

The beach is undoubtedly Karpaha Sand’s crown jewel and the main reason to visit this remarkable resort. This 15km stretch of pristine coastline remains mostly untouched by major tourism, creating a genuinely remote paradise feeling. One of the greatest pleasures of staying in a beachfront Palam suite was waking up to watch the sunrise – something only possible on Sri Lanka’s east coast. We could even watch this beautiful and relaxing spectacle directly from our bed, making early mornings an absolute treat rather than a chore. The experience of greeting each day with golden light streaming across the expansive beach while listening to gentle waves was truly magical.

Beach Activities & Facilities:

Most of the beachfront activities and facilities are included in your stay, giving you plenty of options to enjoy this stunning stretch of coastline without additional costs.

• Beachfront infinity pool with umbrellas and sunbeds
• Beach lounges scattered among palm trees
• Hammocks strung between tropical palms
• Volleyball and Pétanque (bocce) games
• Safe swimming conditions (weather dependent)

Unique Experiences:

Karpaha Sands offers a variety of special experiences that showcase local culture and natural beauty. While some of these unique experiences may cost extra, they provide authentic ways to connect with Sri Lankan traditions and the surrounding environment.

• Air-conditioned library on the second floor with excellent views, large flatscreen TV, two desktop computers, books and games (doubles as children’s activity room when needed, but perfect for adults when quiet)
• Cinema under the stars with private lounges and projector for beach movie screenings
• Catamaran sailing excursions
• Traditional fishing boat experiences in the early morning
• Local fishing net pulling with fishermen – watch them haul in their nets and get fresh catch of the day
• Cooking classes with locals
• Lagoon boat rides and village cycling tours

Spa & Relaxation at Karpaha Sands

The Shanthi Spa specializes in Ayurvedic treatments including hot stone massages, full body scrubs, and warm oil treatments. While we didn’t have time to experience it during our short stay, other guests raved about their treatments. Prices are reasonable, starting at $40 USD for 60-minute sessions. We did not get a chance to try the spa during our short stay, however the looks of it were stunning.

Dining at Hideaway Restaurant

Located on the second floor overlooking the beach and palm trees, Hideaway Restaurant serves all of the hotel’s meals in an intimate setting with stunning views. The first floor acts as a loung and bar for the Karpaha Sands, with sweeping beach views and comfortable seating.

Breakfast

Breakfast is included with all room reservations at Karpaha Sands. We were impressed by the extensive breakfast options combining Sri Lankan and Western cuisine:

Sri Lankan Options:

• Hoppers (savory crepes with egg)
• Dosa (black lentil and fenugreek crepes)
• Various curries (fish, potato)
• Fresh roti

Western Choices:

• Eggs any style, pancakes, waffles
• Eggs benedict and homemade granola
• Fresh juices, smoothies, and cut fruit
• Basket of breads and pastries

Breakfast was delicious with excellent variety and quality. We didn’t get a chance to try lunch or dinner during our short one-night stay, but if breakfast was anything to go by, all meals will be excellent and worth your time.

Lunch & Dinner

The menu features extensive Sri Lankan and Western options including:

• Fresh seafood dishes
• Grilled meats and classic steaks
• Salads, soups, and burgers
• Complete vegan/vegetarian menu

There is also a pool bar menu with pizzas and light bites to keep you full during the day if you want to lay by the pool.

The hotel also offers some special and individual dining options:

• Private beach dining ($75-$105 USD per person)
• Romantic tent dining
• Multi-course set menus with wine pairings

Pricing

Food and beverage prices are surprisingly reasonable for a 5-star luxury resort, much more affordable than comparable luxury chain resorts in Sri Lanka. Given that there are very limited options around the hotel other than small local restaurants, eating most meals at the hotel might be likely.

Main courses are mostly $10-$16 USD, while cocktails are under $10 USD and a large beer will set you back $4 USD.

Open Air Art Gallery

Karpaha Sands is not just a hotel, it also functions as an open-air art gallery. Art installations are peppered around the property, tastefully installed while in keeping with the hotel’s luxury feel. The art installations add to the hotel’s elevated style, and are a fun addition. Walking down the winding paths and spying a new art feature is a fun activity as you stroll around the hotel’s grounds.

Service Excellence

The service at Karpaha Sands was really impressive. As soon as we pulled up, four staff members came out smiling and helped us with all our bags – they even insisted we call them when we were ready to leave rather than lugging everything ourselves. Breakfast service was always quick and the staff made sure we had everything we needed without being pushy about it.

We loved how much effort the staff put into getting everything ready each morning. They were out there early cleaning up the beach and setting up all the umbrellas, loungers, and hammocks before we were even awake. And doing check-in right in our room instead of at some desk was such a nice change from the usual hotel routine.

They brought us a fresh coconut when we first arrived, which hit the spot after spending all day bouncing around in that tuk-tuk. It’s those little things that really made the difference and showed they actually cared about making our stay great.

What We Loved Most About Karpaha Sands

There’s so much to love about Karpaha Sands that it’s hard to know where to start. The glamping tents are huge with tons of space to spread out and relax, but the real showstopper has to be that outdoor waterfall shower – we’d never experienced anything like it and absolutely loved showering outside with the water cascading down like a real waterfall.

Each tent feels completely private thanks to the spacing and all the bushes and gardens around them, plus you’re surrounded by palm trees that make the whole place feel like a tropical paradise. Waking up to those incredible sunrises right from our bed in the beachfront tent was magical – we could just lie there and watch the sun come up over the ocean without even getting up.

The food options at Hideaway Restaurant were more extensive than we expected, and honestly, everything was more affordable than other luxury resorts we’ve stayed at in Sri Lanka. It’s rare to find a place that gets everything so right.

Areas for Improvement

Honestly, it was hard to fault the hotel during our stay. Everything was perfect during our short time there. We had great weather which is also a recipe for success, but I suspect even during a rain storm it would be quite relaxing to watch outside or lie in bed and listen to the sound of the rain on the tent roof.

The only minor thing we’d suggest is adding some mosquito nets around the beds and maybe some mosquito coils back by the outdoor shower area. We didn’t actually see too many mosquitoes during our stay and did our best to keep them out of the room, but a little extra protection wouldn’t hurt.

But we’re reaching here – it was genuinely hard to find anything wrong with this place and it ranks as one of our favorite hotels we’ve ever stayed at.
