Why We Chose The Outpost Hotel on Sentosa Island

Before diving into our experience, let us explain why we picked The Outpost in the first place. We had three main things on our Sentosa agenda: going to Universal Studios Singapore, hitting up the Harry Potter experience and exploring the island’s various attractions. The Outpost’s location seemed perfect as a base for all of this as it is central and walkable to all of those things.

Singapore’s humidity is no joke, and we knew we’d want somewhere we could duck back to during the hottest parts of the day. Having a hotel right in the middle of Sentosa meant we could tackle attractions in the cooler mornings and evenings, then retreat to our air-conditioned room (and hopefully a pool) when the heat got overwhelming. Which, let’s be honest, happens pretty quickly in Singapore’s climate.

We also tend to gravitate toward newer, more modern properties, and The Outpost’s contemporary design appealed to us more than some of the colonial-style hotels and buildings scattered around Sentosa. Plus, those photos of the expansive pool deck definitely caught our attention – there’s something about a good pool setup that just sells us on a place.

In the end though, it came down to value. For Singapore hotel standards, The Outpost’s price point was pretty reasonable, especially for the location and modern amenities. When you’re dealing with Singapore’s notoriously expensive accommodation costs, finding something that ticks the boxes without breaking the bank is always a win.

About The Outpost Hotel Sentosa

The Outpost Hotel officially opened in April 2019 as part of Far East Hospitality’s ambitious development on Sentosa’s Imbiah Hill. The property features 193 rooms, all measuring exactly 24 square meters, making it a more intimate option compared to larger resort hotels on the island.

The hotel’s design is inspired by Sentosa’s heritage as a colonial military base, and while the specific site wasn’t a military building itself, the entire Imbiah area has deep colonial military history. The nearby historic buildings, including what’s now The Barracks Hotel (which actually was converted from British military barracks from the colonial era), give the whole precinct a connection to Singapore’s military past.

What’s interesting about The Outpost is that it sits on the same grounds as the Village Hotel (606 rooms) and The Barracks Hotel (40 rooms), creating a sort of hotel complex. The three properties do share some common areas, most notably the expansive pool deck, though each maintains its own distinct personality. The Outpost positions itself as the adult-centric, trendy option in this trio.

The location on Imbiah Hill puts you right in the action – close to the cable car station, the Merlion, and easy access to all of Sentosa’s attractions. It’s basically a purpose-built modern hotel that nods to the area’s colonial military history through its black-and-white design aesthetic.

Location

Let us start with the best part of our stay – the location is absolutely fantastic. The Outpost sits in the heart of Sentosa, perfectly positioned between the Imbiah and Beach stations on the Sentosa monorail. The main entrance is just a stone’s throw from Imbiah station, making it incredibly convenient to get around the island.

What we loved most was being within walking distance of Sentosa’s main attractions. Palawan Beach, Resorts World, and Universal Studios Singapore are all easily accessible on foot. If you’re planning to explore multiple attractions during your stay, this location is hard to beat among Sentosa accommodation reviews we’ve read.

There’s even a 7-Eleven practically next door, which came in handy for late-night snacks and drinks – something we appreciated given the hotel’s limited dining options (more on that later).

How To Get To The Outpost Sentosa

We came straight from Changi Airport and headed to the rideshare pickup area. Both Grab and Uber operate in Singapore – we went with Grab since it tends to be pretty reliable there.

Here’s something we wish we’d known beforehand: getting into Sentosa usually requires paying an entrance fee, whether you’re driving or taking public transport. If you’re staying at a hotel on the island, they can provide QR codes that cover this fee – either for the tram line or to give to your Grab/Uber driver to show at the toll booth.

The problem? We had no idea about this. When our Grab driver asked for the QR code, we just stared at him blankly. Luckily, since we were arriving at midnight, he was able to tell the guard he was dropping off hotel guests and they waved us through without any issues.

Lesson learned: email the hotel ahead of time and ask for the QR code or whatever documentation you need to enter Sentosa without paying the entrance fee. Don’t be like us and figure this out on arrival.

Speaking of arrival, during check-in the front desk showed us a photo of a QR code on their desk that we could snap a picture of. This was for getting the Sentosa Express tram from Vivo City to the island for future trips. Again, would have been handy to have this info beforehand rather than discovering it after the fact.

Arrival & First Impressions

The arrival experience is admittedly unique – you access the hotel through the car park with elevators that take you up to Level 3 where reception is located. While it might feel unconventional compared to traditional hotel entrances, we actually found it quite efficient once we got the hang of it, as we were close to the entrance for getting cars and taxis (and getting dropped off).

We later discovered through some exploration that it is possible to access The Outpost Hotel through the main entrance of The Village Hotel, by heading through the glass entrance doors, up the escalator to the pool area and walking across the pool deck to The Outpost entrance. This was our preferred entrance and exit once we got the hang of it, until we had to leave with our luggage.

The lobby on Level 3 is compact but thoughtfully designed, with lovely views over to the beach. Since we arrived at midnight, check-in was quick and smooth. One thing that pleasantly surprised us was their simplified approach – no deposits or credit card holds needed since everything operates on a straightforward pay-as-you-go basis.

The Complimentary Snacks: A Learning Experience

One feature we were particularly excited about was the complimentary mini bar snacks. The concept is a good feature – instead of expensive mini bar items, you receive a selection of 3 snacks and 2 non-alcoholic drinks included with your stay.

During our check-in, we received a pre-selected assortment rather than being able to customize it as we’d expected from their website. When we inquired about this and the alcoholic drink options the next morning, we learned that policies had recently changed. According to the website you can swap your five items for two alcoholic items and one snack, but when we enquired about this we were told it wasn’t possible. While this was a bit of a let down it wasn’t the end of the world.

We should mention that while we didn’t receive the welcome drinks mentioned on their website, we did notice other guests enjoying theirs during our stay. This could have been due to our late midnight arrival or perhaps just an oversight – though it would be helpful if the hotel specified any timing restrictions for these amenities on their website.

Nevertheless it was a little disappointing that we didn’t receive a key feature that is advertised all over their website.

The Room: Decent Size with Smart Amenities

We lucked out with a room facing the pool deck, which gave us a great view of all the action below. The room was a decent size at 24 square meters – not huge, but workable.

The bed was really comfortable – no complaints there. We’re talking a proper king size that you actually want to spend time in. The 55″ TV was massive and had tons of channels, which was great for rainy day downtime when we just wanted to chill. Wi-Fi was solid throughout our stay, never had any issues with connectivity.

The air conditioning was almost too powerful – we actually had to turn it down a few notches because it got freezing pretty quickly. The Japanese toilet with bidet and heated seat was always a nice touch in any hotel, and having a Nespresso machine meant we could get our morning coffee fix without having to venture out immediately.

The room had a clean, modern look throughout with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of light. The bathroom amenities were decent quality, and they had some nice tea blends available too.

But here’s where things got a bit odd. The shower is ridiculously big – like, way bigger than it needs to be, which really eats into the living space. There is no extra shower head, just a veyr large tiled area for the shower.

The sitting area is pretty cramped – just a small couch squeezed in the corner, which made it tough to actually relax in the room beyond just lying on the bed.

If you’ve got big suitcases, you’ll be playing Tetris trying to fit everything. There’s just not a lot of practical storage or floor space once you add luggage to the mix.

The room does the job, but the space allocation feels a bit off. Less massive bathroom, more room to actually live in – that would be our vote.

Pools with a View

The pool deck is undoubtedly the star of The Outpost experience. It’s expansive and beautifully designed, shared with guests from the neighboring Village Hotel. In Singapore’s heat and humidity, this oasis becomes your sanctuary.

The main pool deck overlooks the harbor and the beach of Sentosa. It is a beautiful relaxing view with a large expanse. The pools design is inspired by the pamukkale pools of Turkey, and it works well in the space. The multi-tiered levels are great and relaxing and provide the perfect amphitheater for the view overlook.

There are a few other pools on the main pool deck too. There is a shallow kids pool. a lazy river type pool plus another large swimming pool named the Adventure Pool that can take additional guests much like the main feature pool. It is also less busy usually than the main pamukkale pool, so if that’s busy head to the Adventure Pool.

The rooftop pool offers great views and is adults-only, which sounds perfect in theory. However, most of the rooftop space is taken up by the pool and some restaurant tables and chairs, leaving only 5 sun loungers for hotel guests. While they fill up quickly during peak times, we found that with a bit of planning, we could usually secure a spot and it didn’t seem too busy when we visited. The rooftop pool stays open until 6 PM for hotel guests, giving you flexibility throughout the day. After 6:00pm there is a cover charge to use the pool or visit the rooftop deck, though the other pools are open after this time.

One thing we learned regarding the lazy river. The hotel’s website tells guests to “pick up a donut float and get swept away on the gentle currents,” but what they don’t mention is these floats must be rented – a little disappointing that an included amenity costs extra to fully utilize it.

Fitness Facilities – Basic But Functional

The gym is compact and focuses mainly on cardio equipment: 5 treadmills and elliptical machines. While it’s not a full-service fitness center, it covers the basics if you want to maintain your workout routine during your stay, but don’t expect to get any heavy weight sessions in this gym. The gym is also shared across three hotels – The Outpost, The Village and The Barracks, so take that into account if you want to get some exercise in.

Restaurants and Bars

Breakfast isn’t included in standard rates and costs SGD $35 per person. Based on mixed reviews we’d read and our own observation when walking past one morning, we opted to explore the dining options at nearby Vivo City shopping center where choices were plentiful and more budget-friendly. We also enjoyed grabbing coffee from the Starbucks near Imbiah station.

The hotel complex includes Sora & Ora restaurant (which serves the breakfast alongside other meals) and the beautifully renovated colonial-era Mess Hall with multiple dining options such as Bedrock Origin, Miyoshi by Fat Cow, La Faubourg, Native Kitchen, Quentin’s Bar & Restaurant and Royal Taj.

There is also a cafe named the Supply Depot in the lobby of The Village hotel that has snacks and drinks (including alcoholic drinks)

Altitude Coast 1 on top of The Outpost and offers a unique bar and lounge experience with great views atop the only rooftop pool on Sentosa.

Room service is available, though with a couple of quirks. There are limited daytime room service options, and it is more geared to the evenings when the menu is larger. Late night dining is available on Fridays and Saturdays, however the restaurant in closed on Mondays meaning no room service is possible on Mondays.

Service

Service levels were generally friendly, and or check in was a nice enough experience, though there are opportunities for improvement. The pool area operates on a self-service basis – you walk to the bar to order food and drinks rather than having poolside service. While this keeps things casual, we did notice that clearing of empty plates and glasses around the pool could be more frequent.

For a property focusing on modern convenience, these service aspects could be enhanced to match the overall experience.

What We Loved vs. Areas for Enhancement

The Major Highlights:

  • Unbeatable location for exploring Sentosa’s attractions
  • Large, comfortable rooms with great views (if you’re lucky with room assignment)
  • Impressive 55″ TV with extensive channel selection
  • Beautiful, expansive pool deck area that’s perfect for relaxation
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows maximizing natural light
  • Japanese toilet features adding luxury touches
  • Great value considering Singapore’s standard hotel room prices

Areas with Room for Improvement:

  • Service consistency, particularly around pool areas
  • Room design could balance bathroom and living space better
  • More sun loungers at the rooftop pool would be ideal
  • Clearer communication about amenities and current policies

Verdict: Great Value with Realistic Expectations

Here’s our honest assessment: The Outpost Hotel delivers solid value and excellent location benefits, though it’s important to set realistic expectations rather than expecting ultra-luxury resort amenities. For the price point in expensive Singapore, it offers a compelling stay for the right traveler.

The Outpost is perfect if you:

  • Want to maximize your time exploring Sentosa’s amazing attractions
  • Are traveling as a family needing convenient island access
  • Appreciate modern amenities and contemporary design
  • Want good value accommodations without breaking the budget
  • Plan to be out and about most of the day

Consider other options if you:

  • Prefer traditional luxury resort experiences with full-service amenities
  • Want extensive on-site dining and entertainment
  • Are looking for a relaxation-focused resort stay
  • Need larger rooms for extended stays

Final Recommendation

Overall Rating: 7.5/10

The Outpost has carved out a smart niche among Sentosa island hotels – offering modern comfort and unbeatable location at a reasonable price point. While some amenities are more basic than luxury resort standards, the hotel succeeds at what it sets out to do: provide comfortable, convenient accommodation for Sentosa adventurers.

If you’re excited about exploring Universal Studios, relaxing at Palawan Beach, and experiencing everything Sentosa offers, The Outpost Hotel Sentosa makes an excellent base. Just focus on its strengths – location, value, and modern comfort – and you’ll have a great stay!
