Legoland Billund, the original home of the iconic bricks, is a must-visit for Lego enthusiasts of all ages. Whether you’re traveling with little ones or you’re an adult fan of Lego, this park has something for everyone. The park opened in 1968 and has been thrilling visitors old and young alike ever since. We visited in August 2024 and gathered some essential tips to help you maximize your experience. Let’s dive in!
Table of Contents
1. Avoid Danish School Holidays
If you’re planning a trip, try to avoid the Danish school holidays. We visited the first week after schools in Denmark were back in session, and while the park was still bustling, it was less crowded than it likely would’ve been the week before. Timing your visit during off-peak periods can significantly enhance your experience by reducing wait times and giving you more space to explore. Legoland Billund is the most visited attraction in Denmark outside of Copenhagen, so if you can avoid the crowds you’ll be in good stead.
2. Save on Parking
Parking can get pricey, but here’s a little-known hack: park at the P6 parking lot. It’s a short 5-10 minute walk to the entrance, and best of all, it’s free! Not only will you save money, but the stroll to the park is a nice way to start your day, giving you a chance to soak in the excitement before you dive into the Lego-filled fun. If you prefer to park closer to the gates, you can pre-purchase your parking passes via the Legoland Billund website.
3. Purchase Tickets Ahead of Time
One of the easiest ways to save money on your Legoland Billund trip is by purchasing your tickets online ahead of time. The walk-up price can be significantly higher than the online price—for example, 299 DKK ($45 USD) online versus 499 DKK ($75 USD) at the gate. Additionally, the closer you get to your visit date, the higher the prices may be. Planning ahead not only guarantees your entry but also helps you keep more money in your pocket.
Purchase your tickets online here at the Legoland Billund website.
4. Arrive Early
We arrived at Legoland Billund around 9:15 AM, and it made all the difference. The park officially opens at 10:00 AM, but arriving early gave us the chance to snap some great photos outside with minimal people around. Plus, there were practically no lines at the entrance, allowing us to breeze through. By 9:30 AM, we noticed lines starting to form, so getting there early is definitely a good tip.
5. Secure a Locker
One of the first things you should do when you enter the park is secure a locker. These are conveniently located at the front of the park and are perfect for storing food, wet weather gear, sweaters, and any other items you don’t want to carry around all day. It’s a small investment that pays off in comfort and convenience.
6. Bring Your Own Food
Food inside Legoland Billund can be expensive, but the good news is that you’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks. We highly recommend packing a picnic to enjoy at one of the many scenic spots around the park.
7. Try The Buffet For Hungry Families
If you prefer to eat in the park and want to ensure everyone in the family is satisfied, consider the family buffet. It’s an all-you-can-eat option that includes soft drinks and ice cream, making it a hit with kids. The best part? Kids eat at nearly half the price of adults – 129 DKK (~$20 USD) for children vs 249 DKK (~$37 USD) for adults. If you’re a hungry family, this can be a great value, ensuring everyone gets their fill.
8. Stay Hydrated
There are multiple water refilling stations throughout the park, so bring your own water bottles and stay hydrated without spending extra money. The water filling stations are shown on the Legoland Billund map—they’re essentially just taps in the wall. The water is perfectly fine to drink, so if you’re looking to save a bit more during your visit, definitely fill up your bottles here.
9. Start at the Back To Maximize Ride Time
Here’s a strategy that worked wonders for us: after entering the park, head straight to the back and start your adventure there. We were able to ride the Polar X-plorer, X-treme Racers, and The Dragon within 30 minutes. By the time we reached The Eagle ride, the wait time had already jumped to 60 minutes, so we pivoted to the Lego Canoe ride, which only had a 15-minute wait. Starting at the back allows you to hit some of the most popular rides before the majority of visitors catch up.
10. Book Traffic School Early
The Traffic School attraction is a fun and educational ride designed for children aged 6 to 13. Here, kids can learn to drive in traffic, fill up at the petrol pump, or even take the car through a carwash. It’s a fantastic way for kids to feel independent and get behind the wheel—Lego style!
However, this is a first-come, first-served attraction, and it is very popular. The spots for the day tend to bookup quickly. If this sounds like something your children would enjoy, head there first to secure a time slot, or you may miss out.
11. Explore Miniland
Miniland is the heart of every Legoland park, and Billund’s is the original, dating back to the park’s opening in 1968. This section of the park, filled with incredibly detailed Lego models, was one of our favorite parts of the visit. The best part? It doesn’t require any lineups or waiting, so you can stroll through at your leisure. We chose to explore Miniland toward the end of our visit, but it’s also a great option during the busiest parts of the day when ride lines are long. This way, you can maximize your time and avoid standing in queues.
12. Download the Legoland Billund Resort App
The Legoland Billund Resort app is a must-have for navigating the park efficiently. It offers real-time queue times for rides, directions, and other useful information. We found it particularly helpful when planning our next move, especially since WiFi is only available at certain spots, such as near the entrance gates. To stay connected throughout the park, consider getting an eSIM so you can check wait times and other info as you explore.
13. Reserve & Ride Passes
Legoland Billund offers three levels of ‘express passes’ known as Reserve & Ride. The first level allows you to join lines virtually instead of physically standing in them. The second level lets you skip the line at 50% of the wait time, and the third level (the most expensive) means you can virtually bypass lines entirely.
We opted not to use any Reserve & Ride options and still managed to ride everything we wanted throughout the day (we stayed from opening until close). By strategically hitting popular rides early, lining up during meal times, and being flexible with our schedule, we didn’t feel the need for an express pass. The Reserve & Ride passes aren’t cheap, so if you’re looking to save some cash, skip them and go with a solid strategy instead.
You can book the reserve & ride when you buy your ticket or also within the park. If you feel like the park is very busy on the day you visit, it might pay to get some level of Reserve & Ride pass.
14. Consider the Photo Pass
If you’re someone who loves ride photos, the Photo Pass at Legoland Billund might be worth considering. For 200 DKK (about $30 USD), you get unlimited digital photos from your day—quite a bargain compared to other theme parks like Disney or Universal. Just make sure to activate your pass from the very beginning of your visit to capture all the fun moments throughout the day.
15. Be Prepared for Danish Weather
Denmark’s weather is notoriously unpredictable, and it can change in the blink of an eye. When we visited, the forecast called for sunshine all day, but we still experienced rain showers in the late morning and early afternoon before it cleared up again in the evening. We recommend bringing wet weather gear like ponchos, umbrellas, and rain jackets to stay dry.
Don’t forget to pack a sweater too! The wind can get chilly, especially on some of the rides.
If it does start raining, you can also try to head towards some of the indoor attractions such as The Haunted House, Lloyd’s Lazer Maze, Arctic Basecamp or even the shows at Lego Studios.
16. Visit the Lego Store During the Day
One of the highlights of visiting Legoland Billund is, of course, the Lego store. They even have a few unique Legoland sets only available at Legoland Billund.
However, everyone seems to have the same idea of visiting the store at the end of the day—right after the rides close (which is an hour before the park itself closes). This causes long lines and a busy, crowded store.
To avoid this, try to visit the store earlier in the day. If you shop before 3:00PM, the park will store your purchases for you at the information point, and you can simply pick them up when you leave. This way, you can enjoy a stress-free shopping experience and avoid the last-minute rush.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Time Do You Need at Legoland Billund?
This really depends on who’s in your group. For us with just two adults, one full day was perfect. We were able to ride almost all the popular attractions and explore the park at a brisk pace. However, if you’re visiting with children, especially younger ones who may need breaks or naps, one day might not be enough. If your kids are older and can enjoy most of the rides, you may also consider spreading your visit over two days to make sure you don’t miss anything.
Here’s a little tip: while we were at the park, we received a message through the Legoland Billund app offering an upgrade to a second day for just 99 DKK—definitely something to consider if you want more time at the park. This might not be a guarantee to receive this offer though.
Our recommendation? Plan for 1-2 days depending on your group’s pace and interests.
