Fairmont Golden Prague Review: Best Luxury Hotel in Prague’s Old Town?

·

When we decided on Prague for a relaxing getaway, we wanted somewhere that would let us explore both the vibrant city and indulge in some serious luxury downtime. The Fairmont Golden Prague, nestled right on the banks of the Vltava River, seemed like the perfect choice. And honestly? We weren’t disappointed – though our week here wasn’t without its surprises.

A Hotel with Stories to Tell

Walking into the Fairmont Golden Prague feels like stepping into a piece of history that’s been given a stunning modern makeover. The building itself dates back to the 1960s vision of what luxury hospitality could be in Czechoslovakia. When it first opened in August 1974, this was one of the country’s first five-star hotels – a bold statement with its distinctive brutalist architecture featuring glass, wood, and metal elements.

The hotel still retains its Soviet-era architecture, particularly evident in the exterior’s angular, geometric form, but the recent renovation has transformed it into something far more elegant while respecting its architectural heritage. It’s fascinating to see how modern luxury design can breathe new life into such a historically significant structure.

We loved learning that after years as the InterContinental Prague (from 2003 to 2020), the property closed and has undergone extensive renovations before re-emerging in April 2025 as Eastern Europe’s only Fairmont hotel. Walking through those hallways, we could still smell that wonderful “new luxury hotel” scent from the fresh carpeting – there’s something oddly satisfying about being among the first guests to experience a newly built space.

The Fairmont Golden Prague now houses 297 rooms and suites, and we were particularly intrigued by the dedicated Fairmont Gold floors with their own private reception and concierge services. The hotel’s focus on sustainability also caught our attention on their website, showing they’re thinking about modern hospitality values alongside luxury.

Location, Location, Location

We can’t overstate how perfect the location is. Seriously – we were just 500 meters from the Prague Astronomical Clock, which meant a leisurely five-minute stroll put us right in the heart of Prague’s historic center. After long days of exploring, coming back to our riverside sanctuary felt like the best of both worlds.

Getting there from the airport was a breeze too – about 20-25 minutes by car. Pro tip we learned from locals: skip the traditional taxis and use Bolt instead. Much more budget-friendly and just as reliable. Uber is also present in Prague and can work for you if you don’t have Bolt.

Summed Up In a few words…

An almost-perfect Prague base in an excellent location with stunning new facilities.

Our Midnight Arrival

We rolled up to the hotel just after midnight, exhausted from travel but curious about our first impressions. The lobby of the Fairmont Golden Prague was quiet, and while there wasn’t a bell person available at that hour (totally understandable), check-in was refreshingly straightforward. Passports, quick form to sign, and we were good to go.

One thing that caught us off guard was the daily room deposit of 4,000 CZK (approximately €164). For our nine day stay, that added up to quite a bit tied up in credit card holds, so definitely factor that into your budget planning if you’re staying for several nights.

Our Home Away from Home

Our 24-square-meter Fairmont 1 King Room became our cozy retreat, and we were genuinely impressed with how thoughtfully designed it was. The king bed was exactly what we needed after long days of sightseeing, and having a Nespresso machine for morning coffee felt like a small luxury that made a big difference.

What We Absolutely Loved: The lighting in this room deserves an award. Unlike so many hotels where you’re squinting in dim lighting, our room was beautifully illuminated with hanging fixtures next to the bed, LED strips behind the headboard and TV, multiple reading lights, and even dedicated lighting highlighting signatures from the original 1970s hotel. It created such a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The bathroom was a dream – that large rainfall shower with Le Labo amenities made every evening feel like a spa experience. The towels were incredibly fluffy (the kind you want to steal), and the electric towel warmer was a nice touch we hadn’t expected.

We also appreciated the automatic blinds (controlled by buttons), the spacious safe that easily fit our laptops, and the Dyson hairdryer. The Wi-Fi was lightning-fast once we logged in with our free ALL/Accor account, though we had to re-authenticate every 24 hours.

The Not-So-Perfect Bits: Nothing’s perfect, and we encountered a few quirks that were more amusing than annoying. The shower, while gorgeous, had a design flaw where water would leak from the bottom of the door onto the bathroom floor – we would put towels down to soak it all up, but it seemed like an oversight for a luxury property.

The automatic night lights were both a blessing and a curse. Great when we needed to get up in the middle of the night, but they were so sensitive that they’d turn on whenever we moved in bed. We eventually had to cover them up because they kept waking us. A simple on/off switch would solve this completely.

Another pain point for us was the fit out still underway at the hotel. Surrounding the hotel’s entrance are several high-end shops still under construction that are not open yet (but soon to be). Our room on the second floor was positioned right above the construction zone, and meant for a couple of days we heard a lot of banging and sawing. While frustrating, we also noted that we were almost the only guests on the second floor, and certainly the only ones in the same area on our floor.

When booking your stay, we highly advise to book the room category above ours (book the Deluxe King or above), so as to avoid any possible construction noise while the hotel still puts on the finishing touches. Bonus: the Deluxe King is also a lot bigger than the Fairmont King room!

One other oddity: no hooks anywhere for hanging clothes or towels (despite having an electric towel warmer), and surprisingly, no full-length mirror in the room.

Oh, and heads up about the minibar – in usual Fairmont style, it’s pressure-sensored, so removing anything will trigger an automatic charge to your room. We learned this the hard way when we just wanted to make room for our own drinks!

Pool & Spa Paradise

The 1,400-square-meter spa complex absolutely stole our hearts. The L-shaped design connecting indoor and outdoor areas felt seamless, and we spent hours lounging by both pools. The outdoor section, surrounded by gardens, became our evening ritual spot – especially that jacuzzi under the stars.

We loved that everything was provided: towels, water bottles, even pillows for the loungers. The indoor area had a wonderful sauna and steam bath, plus private saunas in the changing rooms for when we wanted more solitude.

The fitness studio being available 24/7 was perfect for our weird sleep schedule (thanks, jet lag), and we appreciated the complimentary group classes, though they only run Monday through Friday with two sessions daily.

There was one small awkwardness that we weren’t the biggest fan of. The spa is located on floor -1 which is below street level. While the design is beautiful, we quickly found that pedestrians walking by above would look down into the garden area with the outdoor pool and jacuzzi area. It felt a bit like being in a fishbowl at times, which was the only thing that made us slightly self-conscious during our relaxation time. While its not a hugely trafficked footpath, there are still curious pedestrians walking by and looking down into the pool and garden area.

Service That Really Cared (Mostly)

This is where the Fairmont Golden Prague really showed its heart. Unfortunately, we came down with a terrible flu during our first few days (not exactly the vacation we’d planned!), and the staff’s genuine concern and helpfulness was touching. They checked on us, offered to bring ice and water, pointed us toward the nearest 24/7 pharmacy, and even helped extend our stay without any hassle.

We happened to be there during Prague Pride weekend, and the hotel was incredibly proactive – leaving notes about potential traffic disruptions and emailing us with updates. They even offered to help with alternative transportation arrangements. Even though it didn’t end up affecting us much, knowing they were looking out for us felt great.

The welcome touch was a nice gesture on our arrival too. Our personalized welcome note came with fresh apples, water bottles, and chocolate-covered blueberries – such a thoughtful gesture that made us feel special from the moment we arrived.

Where Things Got Frustrating: Unfortunately, housekeeping consistency became a recurring issue that dampened our enthusiasm. Our Le Labo body lotion arrived empty, and what followed was a five-day saga trying to get it replaced. We positioned the empty pump bottle by the sink so housekeeping would notice – however they just moved the empty bottle back to its normal spot. We called concierge, who promised to contact housekeeping – no one came. Eventually we left a small written note next to the empty bottle, and it was finally refilled.

But the real head-scratcher was when housekeeping inexplicably removed our welcome amenities while we were out exploring the city. We were saving our chocolate-covered blueberries and fresh apples for later in our stay, but they we returned one day to them being nowhere in the room. Taking away welcome gifts felt particularly odd and left us wondering why.

We also noticed other guests had drinks by the pool, but we could never figure out how to order them – no visible menu or staff to ask.

A Culinary Journey Across Six Venues

With six different dining and drinking spots at the Fairmont Golden Prague, we never lacked for variety – and honestly, we loved having so many options without leaving the hotel.

Coocoo’s Nest in the ground floor became our regular hangout spot. Whether we needed morning coffee, afternoon snacks, or evening drinks, this warm and inviting space delivered. Their elevated bar bites and traditional Czech open-faced sandwiches were perfect for casual dining, and we loved that it was open all day.

Zlata Praha became our special occasion spot. This rooftop flagship restaurant on the 9th floor offers incredible views of Prague along with dishes that beautifully blend modern techniques with traditional Czech flavors. We learned to make reservations well in advance, especially for weekend dinings – it fills up fast, and for good reason.

Kafka Brasserie handled our breakfast needs perfectly every morning from 6:30 to 11:00 AM. The Czech-style breakfast options like baked eggs with paprika and creative eggs benedict variations gave us a delicious introduction to local flavors, though the buffet was equally appealing when we wanted variety.

Golden Eye transported us back to the 1970s with its cosmopolitan vibe, craft cocktails, and Asian-inspired cuisine. The 9th-floor location offers sweeping river views, and the evening DJs created exactly the sophisticated atmosphere we were hoping for. Just note it’s closed Sundays and Mondays.

Greenhouse became our go-to for lunch and dinner when we wanted to stay close to the hotel. The Josper grill and rotisserie preparations paired beautifully with Czech beers and wines, and the traditional snacks gave us an authentic taste of local heritage.

Tilia Garden, located conveniently beside the spa, was perfect for our health-conscious moments. The bright, airy space with brass accents and sky-blue tiles felt uplifting, and their chia puddings, overnight oats, and fresh juices were exactly what we needed between spa sessions.

The 24-hour room service was a lifesaver during our sick days, with different menus for different times – breakfast from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM, all-day options from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and night bites from 11:00 PM through 6:00 AM. They really had every hour covered.

Our Honest Take

After nine nights at the Fairmont Golden Prague, we’re genuinely impressed with what this property offers. The combination of prime location, stunning architecture, luxurious amenities, and mostly excellent service creates a compelling Prague experience.

The spa facilities alone are worth the stay, and having six dining venues means you truly never need to leave if you don’t want to. The staff’s genuine care during our illness showed us the kind of hospitality that makes a hotel memorable.

However, the housekeeping inconsistencies and minor design oversights prevent this from being a flawless experience. These feel like growing pains for a newly renovated property rather than fundamental problems, and we suspect they’ll improve with time.

For travelers seeking luxury accommodations with comprehensive on-site amenities in the heart of Prague, the Fairmont Golden Prague delivers beautifully. The riverside setting combined with easy access to historic attractions creates an ideal base for exploring this incredible city.

Value & Pricing

It’s worth noting that the Fairmont Golden Prague is quite a bit more expensive than some of Prague’s other highly rated hotel offerings, though this can be attributed in part to the prestigious Fairmont name and brand standards.

Prague used to be synonymous with cheaper Eastern European travel, but our latest experience here was far different from our first visit 15 years ago, which was much more budget-friendly. Prices in Prague seem to be catching up with Western Europe in many aspects, especially for anything in the Old Town area (beer prices are still relatively cheap though!).

While you’ll pay a premium for the Fairmont experience, the combination of location, amenities, and service quality does justify the cost for luxury travelers.

Final Recommendation

Overall Rating: 9/10

Despite a few service hiccups, we wholeheartedly recommend the Fairmont Golden Prague. The unbeatable location, stunning spa, and genuine hospitality make it an excellent choice for luxury travelers to Prague. Overall, this Fairmont Golden Prague review reflects a property that delivers exceptional value in Prague’s competitive luxury market.

Our stay would have been improved with less construction noise and a slightly better housekeeping experience. All-in-all though the Fairmont Golden Prague is an excellent property and a fabulous option when coming to Prague.
