We arrived at 6:30pm on a Tuesday in late August and were seated immediately, while others were still waiting outside. Early for dinner by Italy standards, but somewhat standard for tourists.

Timing helps, but knowing where to go matters more. Many of the people in the takeaway line were actually waiting for a table, but were unaware they were lining up incorrectly for a takeaway pizza.

By the time we left the restaurant, the queue was much larger with many more people waiting outside the front.

The Pizza

We ordered:

The Marinara was the standout for us. No cheese, just tomato, garlic, and oregano, but the flavour was strong and well balanced.

The Margherita is the most popular and still very good.

While I do usually personally prefer a crispy crust, I’ve had my fair share of Neapolitan pizza. And this one was certainly some of the best Neapolitan pizza I’ve ever had.

Very quick.

The kitchen runs continuously, and pizzas are served within 5-10 minutes. There are multiple pizza ovens pumping out pizzas for the restaurant.

Yes, as long as you avoid a long wait.

The pizza is affordable, traditional, and consistent. If you arrive at a good time and follow the right process, it’s an easy and worthwhile stop in Naples.

Comparable pizza around other parts of Italy goes for €15-25, whereas in Napoli they can be as low as €3-4

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele Locations Around the World

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele has expanded well beyond Naples, with locations in cities like London, Rome, Milan, Tokyo, and Singapore.

These are officially licensed restaurants, but the experience is quite different from the original.

We’ve tried the Singapore location, and while it was good, it didn’t feel the same.

Key differences compared to Naples:

  • Prices are much higher
    In Naples, pizzas are around €6. At other locations around Italy or around the world, expect to pay significantly more.
  • The menu is much larger
    The original keeps things simple with just four pizzas. Other locations offer a full menu with more toppings, sides, and drinks.

Is the Original in Naples Better?

In our experience, yes.
